The Many Wonders of Portugal
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is the
largest city in the country, and the second most important
economic and financial area on the peninsula of Iberia. It is
the wealthiest city in Portugal and produces over one-third of
the GDP of the country. Lisbon was 1000 years old when Rome
conquered it in 205 B.C. German tribes took it over in the 5th
century, then the Moors in the 8th. The Crusaders took it back
over in 1147 and it has become the cultural, economic and
eventually political hub of Portugal.
Rich in history, Lisbon has the most remarkable architecture in
all of Europe because of the various invading peoples. Many of
the building, monuments, and statues are all a testament to the
skill and intelligence of these invaders. Many Roman-built ruins
are still standing and pristine against the backdrop of the
countryside. Some of the archaeological discoveries hint that
perhaps Phoenicians were there in the millennium before Christ.
The fantastic harbor made it perfect for trading ships from all
over the Mediterranean, as well as allowing ships to go up the
Tagus River to trade in the interior for metals, salted fish,
salt and Lusitanian horses. One place had referred to
Lisbon as a pearl in Europe. With the history, culinary
delights, places to go and things to do, you would have to agree
that this city is certainly an exciting destination.
Besides the overwhelming history of the
city, its harbor helped it became very wealthy through trading.
Before being called Lisbon, "Olissipo" exported a fish sauce
called garum to the Roman empire, as well as wine, salt and as
mentioned, its famously fast Lusitanian's. It also acquired
wealth by suppressing piracy in the Med and many technological
advancements especially to Britannia and Germany.
The Moors arrived and added to the
wonderful architecture, the thriving economy and diverse
culture. They were Muslims from North Africa and the Middle
East, and built a new stronger city wall. The population was now
Roman, Arab, Jew, Christian, and Berber; as well as many
wondering nomads from the north, east and west. The Moorish
influence is still visible today in the older part of Lisbon
that survived the earthquake of 1755, called the Alfama, derived
from the Arabic "al-hamma". When the crusaders re-conquered the
city, Christianity was re-established and became one of the most
important events in the city's history. Many of the mosques
became churches and Muslims were forced to either become Roman
Catholics or leave. History continued to cause various
upheavals in Lisbon, especially the earthquake and tsunami in
1755. But like every other great city, it rebuilt, bigger and
better considering the wealth that continued to come in due to
the shipping and exploration of the country.
